I somehow doubt that that anyone of the target group is actually paying attention or even listening to what a mid-50s Canadian white guy might have to say, let alone acknowledge the relevance of what he has to say on their world today. So, we'll just see how much gets read, and how much I really get around to saying. Here is the short list of some of the things that I wish I had done in preparation for the move into Adulthood
- Learn to Dance, and then get out and do it regularly.
- Learn to meditate, and then understand when to do it
- Learn the broader points of Negotiation. Learn the finer points of Mediation.
- Learn time Management
- Learn how to value and manage friendships
- Learn the discipline of Money Management.
- Discover the wisdom and understanding of when to wear the uniform of the rowdy thrill seeking 'kid', and when and how to wear the uniform of responsibility
- Learn when and how to shave. Understand the value of a well kept beard and a good haircut.
- I wish I had learned earlier when it was tome to think about personal hygiene; when to begin using a deodorant, when to begin showering daily, when/how often to wash my hair, face and hands, when to begin using cologne and to stop relying on scented deodorants to provide that personalized aura/aroma.
- Learn how not to chew your fingernails, and to appreciate the value of a manicure
- Learn when to spend real money on quality, and when to spend on throwaways; its really about understanding value
- Learn how to buy good shoes and how to maintain them
- Buy a good suit
- Buy a good bed
- Learn to cook
- Learn to tell a good bottle of wine from overpriced plonk, when to spend the money on good wine and when to recognize that beer is not an appropriate choice
- Develop an life long exercise regime
- Learn yoga/tai chi
- Learn to type
- Learn how to set a table properly, with all the plates, cutlery, glasses and napkins
- Learn how to use all the cutlery, and when. Table manners are invaluable
- Get a motorcycle license, and learn to drive properly
- Learn to swim
- Learn the difference between intimacy and sex
- find a dentist who you can keep seeing for years, and who will help you keep your teeth for years
- find a doctor who you can keep seeing for years, who can become a confidante, and help keep you healthy. See him at least once a year. Resolve to outlive your doctor.
